David Hickson

About the Author


David Hickson is an award-winning filmmaker and writer from South Africa. His work has included internationally released feature films, television series and live entertainment television shows.

David was born and grew up in Cape Town during the apartheid years. He studied architecture at the University of Cape Town at the height of student protests against the Nationalist government. His experiences of that time fueled his passion to tell uniquely South African stories.

David worked as an architectural illustrator before studying film. He has established himself as a writer and director with a talent for telling thought-provoking and emotional stories.

His screenwriting has included collaborations with famed South African playwright Mbongeni Ngema, sparking an interest in the stories of the Zulu people. He directed Beat the Drum, a film that garnered over 30 international awards, and Charlie Jade, a Canadian sci-fi series. His television work has included drama series and multi-camera live broadcasts on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Big Brother and Miss World.

David traveled to Italy in 2010, an adventure that he and his family are still enjoying. He loves walking and cycling in the hills of Italy, drinking the local wine, and writing stories that entertain and stir the emotions of his readers.
